The Norfolk Public Schools Foundation gives scholarships annually to Norfolk High School students. We are proud to partner with all donors to offer these students aid for post-secondary education.Student Applicants please read:

Doug Brown Memorial Scholarship
2013 Scholarship Amount: $1000 2013 Number To Be Awarded: One Application Deadline: April 2, 2013 Doug Brown was a teacher, mentor, and coach at NPS for many years. He taught American History to sophomores of Norfolk High School for 28 years. He also coached many sports, including tennis for nine years and girls varsity basketball for 18 years. Following his retirement in 2006, Doug was the athletic director for Northeast Community College for four years. He enjoyed refereeing and officiated volleyball for 30 years and basketball for 14. Doug was a humanitarian with a bright smile. He served as the 2010 Norfolk Area United Way campaign chairman, was a mentor for the TeamMates program, and was an active member of Trinity Episcopal Church for 32 years. Mr. Brown passed away in October 2010.
Prior to his death, Doug battled an illness and was sustained his last few months by frequent blood transfusions. With such a loving heart and warm personality, it was not a surprise to anyone that knew him that his blood type was B Positive! B Positive is the title of this memorial scholarship because it reflected Doug Brown’s best attribute!
The family of Doug Brown wishes to honor his life by passing on his legacy of loving one another and living each day to the fullest. They know that his scholars, players, friends and colleagues will touch other lives as he touched theirs. The final assignment from Mr. Brown is to B Positive!

Deb Cover Memorial Scholarship2013 Scholarship Amount: $725 2013 Number To Be Awarded: One Application Deadline: April 2, 2013 Deb Cover began her career working for ESU#9 of Hastings and then as a member of the Axtell School District. Upon moving to Norfolk in 1982, she worked for ESU#8 in Neligh for 13 years, before being employed by Norfolk Public Schools. She worked for NPS as a Speech Pathologist for 15 years. She had a passion for teaching children throughout her career in speech language services and special education. She dearly loved all of her students. Deb passed away after battling cancer in 2010. Must be used for remission of tuition, fees, room, or board. This scholarship will be awarded upon notification of acceptance prior to the beginning of the first semester of the academic year. Selection Criteria: 1. Applicant must have received Speech Language Services at some time in their school career OR be pursuing a college course of study in Speech Pathology. 2. Must write a personal essay (see application). 3. Selection will be made by the NPSF Scholarship Committee with recommendations given by the Cover family. Speech & Debate Scholarship 2013 Scholarship Amount: $200 2013 Number To Be Awarded: One Application Deadline: April 2, 2013 Richard Cross was a Speech/Debate instructor and served NPS for 35 years. He was quoted as saying, "As I look back at all the kids that the program benefited and their future successes, it was no wonder we had one of the greatest forensics programs in the Midwest. There isn't anything greater than a Panther Debater." Mr. Cross's friend and colleague, Al Janovec, taught at Norfolk High School from 1972-2004. He was the Speech and Debate coach and Drama Director at NHS. Mr. Janovec also refereed football for 30+ years. He received the National Forensics League (NFL) 4th Diamond Key Award in 2002 and was the NFL "Coach of the Year" in 2004. He passed away in 2009. Must be used for remission of tuition, fees, room, or board. This scholarship will be awarded upon notification of acceptance prior to the beginning of the first semester of the academic year. Selection Criteria: 1. Individual must have successfully completed two years as a member of the NHS Speech & Debate squad. 2. Must write a personal essay (see application). 3. Any candidate who received scholarships or financial aid that is equal to the expenses incurred for tuition, books, room, board, and fees will not be eligible. 4. Selection will be made by the NPSF Scholarship Committee with recommendations given by the Speech & Debate Coach. 2013 Scholarship Amount: $500.00 2013 Number To Be Awarded: One Application Deadline: April 2, 2013 Mrs. Cindy Froehlich was a physical education instructor for Norfolk High School for 22 years. She coached volleyball, swimming, soccer, track, and Golden Girls Softball. Following an illness, she passed away in 2002. Must be used for remission of tuition, fees, room & board, books, and/or equipment related to the student's area of study. This scholarship will be awarded upon notification of acceptance prior to the beginning of the first semester of the academic year. Selection Criteria: 1. The highest GPA ranking female student who has participated in 3 sports for all 4 years of high school will qualify for this scholarship. No application is needed, recipient is automatically selected based on criteria. 2013 Scholarship Amount: $0 2013 Number To Be Awarded: Zero Application Deadline: Not applicable (will be awarded in 2051) Established to honor the 100 year anniversary of their graduation from NHS, this scholarship was funded by classmates of the Norfolk High School Class of 1951. It honors the accomplishments of the Class of 1951 and celebrates the future potential of the Class of 2051. It is unique in the fact that only graduates from the NHS Class of 2051 are eligible to receive this scholarship. Must be used for remission of tuition, fees, room & board, books, and/or equipment related to the student's area of study. This scholarship will be awarded upon notification of acceptance prior to the beginning of the first semester of the academic year. Selection Criteria: 1. Must be a graduating member of the Class of 2051 from Norfolk High School. 2. A written recommendation from a NPS faculty/staff member. 3. Financial need will be given consideration but is not the primary criteria. 4. Must write a personal essay (see application). 5. Selection will be made by the NPSF Scholarship Committee. Dan and Trudie DePasquale Education Scholarship2013 Scholarship Amount: $600 2013 Number To Be Awarded: One Application Deadline: April 2, 2013 Daniel and Trudie DePasquale served Norfolk Public Schools with their leadership for many years as school administrators. Dan served as Director of Instructional Services from 1988-2001 and Associate Superintendent from 2001-2008. Trudie served as Elementary School Principal for Northern Hills Elementary School and Jefferson Elementary School from 1991-2010. They both enjoyed dedicating their time to help students grow, learn, achieve, and be responsible, and in return they were able to grow and learn from the students. They have created this scholarship to acknowledge the importance of education and with the dream to help NPS students succeed. Selection Criteria:
2013 Scholarship Amount: $1000.001. Student is required to have been enrolled at Norfolk Public Schools for a minimum of three years. 2. College program of study: a four year degree in the field of education. 3. Minimum GPA of 2.5 or greater. 4. A minimum college enrollment of 12 hours per semester. 5. One written recommendation from a NPS staff member with a focus on good citizenship and work habits. 6. Volunteer Community Service will be considered. 7. Selection will be made by the NPSF Scholarship Selection Committee. Eleanor H. Fuhrman Memorial Scholarship2013 Scholarship Amount: $1000.00 2013 Number To Be Awarded: Two Application Deadline: April 2, 2013 Eleanor Fuhrman's teaching career was spent in rural schools in Stanton and Wayne counties for 20 1/2 years, Hoskins Public School for 4 years and for Norfolk Public Schools for 26 years. She served as a teaching principal for 9 years and for 17 years as an elementary media coordinator where she was responsible for making eight libraries and a central media center with catalogs for each one. Mrs. Fuhrman taught three semesters of night classes at Northeast Community College, teaching Children's Literature. She was an active member of her community and church. Mrs. Fuhrman passed away in 2008. Must be used for remission of tuition, fees, room, or board. This scholarship will be awarded upon notification of acceptance prior to the beginning of the first semester of the academic year. Selection Criteria: 1. Must be a student of Norfolk Public Schools 2. Program of future study: Education 3. GPA of 85% or higher 4. Must be enrolled for at least 12 hours per semester. 5. A written recommendation from a NPS faculty/staff member. 6. Student shall have demonstrated volunteer service within the community. 7. Selection will be made by the NPSF Scholarship Committee. ![]() Future Educator Ethnic Minority Student Scholarship 2013 Scholarship Amount: $2000.00 2013 Number To Be Awarded: One Application Deadline: April 2, 2013 It is the hope that this scholarship will help an ethnic minority student who desires to be a teacher to be able to do so. It is meant for persons who would not have the financial ability without some help. Must be used for remission of tuition, fees, room, or board. This scholarship will be awarded upon notification of acceptance prior to the beginning of the first semester of the academic year. Selection Criteria: 1. Financial Need 2. Ethnic minority applicant 3. Program of study: Bachelor Degree in Education or Associate Degree in Education. 4. Two written letters of recommendations from two Norfolk Public Schools faculty or staff members. 5. Must write a personal essay (see application). 6. Extracurricular activities will be considered. 7. An official school transcript is required. GPA & ACT scores will be considered. 8. Selection will be made by the NPSF Scholarship Committee. Future Educator Scholarship2013 Scholarship Amount: $500 2013 Number To Be Awarded: One Application Deadline: April 2, 2013 This scholarship is designated to support the efforts of a student pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Education. Many memorials and donations by former students and educators have been made into this scholarship endowment in honor of past coaches and teachers. Must be used for remission of tuition, fees, room, or board. This scholarship will be awarded upon notification of acceptance prior to the beginning of the first semester of the academic year. Selection Criteria: 1. Program of Study: Bachelor of Science in Education 2. Two written letters of recommendations from two Norfolk Public Schools faculty or staff members. 3. Must write a personal essay (see application). 4. Extracurricular activities will be considered. 5. An official school transcript is required. GPA & ACT scores will be considered. 6. Financial need will be considered. 7. Selection will be made by the NPSF Scholarship Committee. 2013 Scholarship Amount: $1000.00 2013 Number To Be Awarded: One Application Deadline: April 2, 2013 Jenna Krivohlavek graduated third in Norfolk High's class of 1999. Jenna was an intelligent, motivated student-athlete during her years of NHS despite missing half of her junior year because of health reasons. She was an elite competitive swimmer for over 12 years, placing third in the breaststroke at the state high school meet as a freshman and second as a sophomore. She also was involved in many other extracurricular activities at NHS. Jenna's college plans included swimming the Division I level at Rice University and attending medical school after college. Unfortunately, she was unable to fulfill those plans because she became ill after three weeks of college. She was eventually diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. After her first round of treatment she experienced a period of remission which allowed her to complete a semester at Northeast Community College and serve as an assistant coach for the NHS swim team in 2001 and 2002. Even though she was frequently ill during the last few years of her life, she loved education, loved her years at NHS, and loved her brief stint as a college student. Continuing to read and grow intellectually, Jenna never stopped learning even when her health deteriorated. On April 3, 2003, at the age of 22, Jenna passed away; however, she inspired the many people who watched her live exuberantly and well even while she suffered from numerous physical and emotional trials. Because of her own successful, enjoyable years at NHS and her love for education, she would want to reward a senior at NHS who possesses some of the same qualities she valued: intelligence, motivation, curiosity, and extracurricular involvement. This scholarship may be used at any accredited two or four-year college for remission of tuition, fees, books, or room and board. This scholarship will be awarded upon notification of acceptance prior to the beginning of the first semester of the academic year. Selection criteria: 1. Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of at least 94%. 2. Class rank will also be considered. 3. Must write a personal essay (see application). 4. Applicants must submit a letter of recommendation from a NHS instructor describing your intelligence, motivation, and an example of your intellectual curiosity. 5. Selection will be made by the NPSF Scholarship Committee with recommendations from the Krivohlavek family. Lincoln Elementary School Parent Involvement Committee Scholarship2013 Scholarship Amount: $265.00 2013 Number To Be Awarded: Two Application Deadline: April 2, 2013 Lincoln Elementary School opened its doors in 1889, and served the students and community for 120 years. Prior to the 2010-2011 school year, Norfolk Public Schools did restructuring of the district and Lincoln School is now used for several alternative/special education programs. In remembrance of the students attending the original Lincoln Elementary, the Lincoln PIC designated their remaining funds to offer a scholarship. Must be used for remission of tuition, fees, room, or board. This scholarship will be awarded upon notification of acceptance prior to the beginning of the first semester of the academic year. Selection Criteria: 1. Must be a former Lincoln Elementary School student (prior to 2010-2011 school year). 2. Must be a graduating senior from Norfolk High. 3. GPA will be considered 4. A written recommendation from a Norfolk Public Schools faculty or staff member is required. 5. Must write a personal essay (see application). 6. Selection will be made by the NPSF Scholarship Committee. John & Louise Looker Memorial Scholarship 2013 Number To Be Awarded: 15 Application Deadline: April 2, 2013 John and Louise Looker were owners of two businesses in Northeast Nebraska. Lookers Inc. was located in Norfolk. They lived in Norfolk for many years and were active in the community and their church. John Looker passed away in 1972. Louise always loved the Fine Arts. She particularly enjoyed watching the Norfolk High Fine Arts performances. The Lookers believed that a student should be well rounded and actively involved. Upon her death in 1998, the Looker Memorial Scholarship Endowment was established to be awarded to NHS graduates. Must be used for remission of tuition, fees, room & board, books, and/or equipment related to the student's area of study. This scholarship will be awarded upon notification of acceptance prior to the beginning of the first semester of the academic year. Selection criteria: 1. Applicant must have a cumulative GPA of at least a "C", including a school transcript. 2. Must exhibit leadership qualities. 3. Scholastic achievement 4. Good moral character. 5. May attend any accredited 1-year, 2-year, or 4-year college or vocational school excluding correspondence programs. 6. Financial Need will be considered. 7. Must write a personal essay (see application). 8. Selection will be made by Board of Education Scholarship Committee. Eva C. Maas Memorial Scholarship 2013 Scholarship Amount: $200 2013 Number To Be Awarded: One Application Deadline: April 2, 2013 Eva C. Maas was born and raised southeast of Battle Creek. She attended rural Madison County schools and later received a teaching certificate from Wayne State College in 1926. Mrs. Maas taught in the Knox County rural schools for two years before marrying her husband, Henry Maas. Mrs. Maas was proud of her teaching career, but chose to stay home to raise their child. The family lived in Madison, and later moved to Norfolk, living in the Grant Elementary School neighborhood. Mrs. Maas’s love of teaching and desire to help young people was her purpose in setting up a scholarship with the Norfolk Public Schools, through her will, when she passed away in 1984. Her wish was to establish an endowment to create opportunities for students pursuing a post-secondary education at Northeast Community College. Must be used for remission of tuition, fees, room, or board. This scholarship will be awarded upon notification of acceptance prior to the beginning of the first semester of the academic year. Selection Criteria: 1. Recipient must attend Northeast Community College. 2. Consideration will be given for citizenship. 3. Must attach a resume. 4. Must write a personal essay (see application). 5. Selection will be made by the NPSF Scholarship Committee. 2013 Scholarship Amount: $400 2013 Number To Be Awarded: One per year Application Deadline: April 2, 2013 Mr. Roger Maxwell taught at Norfolk Public Schools from 1949 until retiring in 1973. He served as principal at Norfolk High School. Mr. Maxwell also served as the president of District 3 Teacher's Association, and was a member of the National Association of Secondary Principals, Norfolk Area Retired Teachers Association, Norfolk Teachers Association, and Big 10 Principals' Association. He was also active in many Norfolk service organizations and his church. He was the recipient of the "Pat on the Back" award from Norfolk Area Chamber of Commerce and was awarded an admiralship in the mythical Nebraska Navy by former Gov. Kay Orr. Mr. Maxwell passed away in 2003. Must be used for remission of tuition, fees, room, or board. This scholarship will be awarded upon notification of acceptance prior to the beginning of the first semester of the academic year. Selection Criteria: 1. Individual financial need and other scholarships awarded will be considered. 2. Good citizenship 3. Involved in at least one activity 4. Average GPA 5. Graduating senior planning to attend a post-secondary institution. 6. Must write a personal essay (see application). 7. Selection will be made by the NPSF Scholarship Committee. 8. Recipients will be honored with an engraving on a plaque at the High School. J. Paul and Eleanor McIntosh Scholarship Endowment2013 Scholarship Amount: $1000 2013 Number To Be Awarded: One Application Deadline: April 2, 2013 J.Paul and Eleanor McIntosh believe in the effect a caring adult can have on the life of a young adult and the power of a good education. As a former NPS teacher and guidance counselor, J. Paul witnessed firsthand the full potential of young people in Norfolk schools. He and Eleanor wish to foster that potential through a scholarship endowment for NHS graduates.
Must be used for remission of tuition, fees, room, or board. This scholarship will be awarded upon notification of acceptance prior to the beginning of the first semester of the academic year. Selection Criteria: 1. Financial need will be a considered. 2. All are encouraged to apply. Those attending Northeast Community College will be given primary consideration. 3. A detailed written recommendation from a NHS Guidance Counselor is required. The recommendation should focus on the future potential of the student and how this scholarship can help this student. 4. Must write a personal essay (see application). 5. GPA of 2.0 or higher 6. Selection will be made by the NPSF Scholarship Committee with a recommendation from the McIntosh family. 2013 Scholarship Amount: $500.00 2013 Number To Be Awarded: One Application Deadline: April 2, 2013 Jerry Neely began his career in education at NPS in 1949 as a teacher, later evolving into positions of Assistant Junior High Principal, Director of Secondary Education, and his final position as Director of Instruction. Mr. Neely also served as a Junior High School football, basketball, and track coach for a number of years. He received numerous awards for his work in education and school activities. Mr. Neely retired in 1989. He was active in several service organizations and his church. He passed away in 2008. This scholarship will be granted to a Norfolk High senior who plans to attend a four-year college and intends to become a teacher. Must be used for remission of tuition, fees, room, or board. This scholarship will be awarded upon notification of acceptance prior to the beginning of the first semester of the academic year. Selection Criteria: 1. Program of Study: Education 2. Must write a personal essay (see application). 3. Extracurricular activities will be considered. 4. A written letter of recommendation from a NPS faculty/staff member. 5. An official school transcript. 6. Selection will be made by the NPSF Scholarship Committee. Norfolk Public Schools Foundation Scholarship Endowment2013 Scholarship Amount: $500 2013 Number To Be Awarded: One Application Deadline: April 2, 2013 This endowment was created by the combination of many donor gifts. Each year the NPS Foundation sets aside money from these donors to offer scholarships to NHS students. Many NPS staff and teachers contribute each year to this fund with a desire to future the opportunities of their students. Must be used for remission of tuition, fees, room, or board. This scholarship will be awarded upon notification of acceptance prior to the beginning of the first semester of the academic year. Selection Criteria: 1. This scholarship is based on financial need. 2. Applicant must be involved in at least one activity. 3. Must exhibit good citizenship. 4. GPA of 2.0 or higher 5. Must attach a resume 6. Must write a personal essay (see application). 7. Selection will be made by the NPSF Scholarship Committee. Northern Hills Elementary School Parent/Teacher Organization Scholarship2013 Scholarship Amount: $125.00 2013 Number To Be Awarded: One Application Deadline: April 2, 2013 Northern Hills Elementary School opened it's doors in 1955, and served the students and community of Norfolk for 50+ years. Because of declining enrollment, the building was closed following the 2009-2010 school year. In remembrance of the students at Northern Hills, the PTO donated its remaining funds to create a scholarship. Must be used for remission of tuition, fees, room, or board. This scholarship will be awarded upon notification of acceptance prior to the beginning of the first semester of the academic year. Selection Criteria: 1. Must be a former Northern Hills Elementary School student (prior to 2010-2011 school year). 2. Must be a graduating senior from Norfolk High. 3. GPA will be considered. A suggested GPA of 3.5 or higher is recommended but all former Northern Hills students will be considered. 4. A written recommendation from a NPS faculty/staff member is required. 5. Must write a personal essay (see application). 6. Selection will be made by the NPSF Scholarship Committee. Bev Polak Tribute Scholarship2013 Scholarship Amount: $500.00 2013 Number To Be Awarded: One Application Deadline: April 2, 2013 Bev Polak, a Norfolk High graduate, returned to NHS over 20 years ago as the secretary to the principal. Mrs. Polak is responsible for all financial activities of the High School. During her career those activities and her responsibilities have grown tremendously. Mrs. Polak works with students, parents, staff, the general public, and administration to provide information and services. Bev is detail oriented, has a strong work ethic, and does her job with integrity. She is known for her willingness to serve all in a professional manner.

Selection Criteria: 1. Must be seeking a course of study in Accounting at Northeast Community College. 2. Work ethic and integrity as identified by NPS faculty/staff member recommendation. One written recommendation from a NPS faculty/staff member is required. 3. Selection will be made by the NPSF Scholarship Committee with a recommendation from an Accounting teacher. 2013 Scholarship Amount: $400 2013 Number Awarded: One Application Deadline: April 2, 2013 Karl Stefan was born in Bohemia (later called Czechoslovakia) and immigrated with his family to Omaha, Nebraska when he was two years old. Mr. Stefan's first job was in a packing house in Omaha, but through determination he attended YMCA night school to study telegraphy and became one of the youngest and fastest telegraphers in the country. Later he married and moved to Norfolk in 1909. He was employed as a telegrapher of the Norfolk Daily News. Karl Stefan became best known throughout Northeast Nebraska through the medium of radio. He helped build radio station WJAG in 1922. Also, he broadcast programs in seven languages and during World War II frequently appeared on "U.S. Voice of America" broadcasts, speaking to Czechs in his native tongue. In 1934 he ran for Congress in the Third Nebraska District and won. He served 16 years in Congress until his death in 1951. The Karl Stefan Memorial Airport is named in recognition of his enthusiastic backing of aviation development and long service to the Norfolk community. This scholarship is funded through the Stefan family and in conjunction with The Elkhorn Valley Museum and Research Center in his honor. Must be used for remission of tuition, fees, room, or board. This scholarship will be awarded upon notification of acceptance prior to the beginning of the first semester of the academic year. Selection Criteria: 1. Recipient must be a graduating senior with at least average grades. 2. Student will attend an accredited post-secondary institution 3. Must show strong character, citizenship, and involvement in activities. 4. Must write a personal essay (see application). 5. Selection will be made by the NPSF Scholarship Committee. Ted & Linda (Lanman) Toay Memorial Scholarship 2013 Scholarship Amount: $500.00 2013 Number To Be Awarded: Two Application Deadline: April 2, 2013 Linda Lanman Toay was born in Norfolk and married her high school sweetheart Ted Toay. She was employed in the travel industry for a number of years. Her hobbies included running and hiking. Linda passed away in 1997. Ted also graduated from NPS and worked in the travel and hospitality industry. His career took him all over the world, to every continent. He had many opportunities to travel with his family and enjoyed sharing his special places across the country. Ted passed away in 2007. Must be used for remission of tuition, fees, room, or board. This scholarship will be awarded upon notification of acceptance prior to the beginning of the first semester of the academic year. Selection Criteria: 1. Financial need will be the primary consideration. 2. Two scholarships are awarded: one to a female recipient and one to a male recipient. 3. Must be involved in at least one extracurricular activity during high school. 4. Must attend an accredited two or four year college 5. Must have at least an 86% accumulative average 6. Applicants may pursue any major. 7. Selection will be made by the NPSF Scholarship Committee. 8. Recipients will be honored with an engraving on a plaque at the High School. Ralph T., Florence M., Jennie & Edna Walker Memorial Scholarship 2013 Scholarship Amount: $400 2013 Number To Be Awarded: Two Application Deadline: April 2, 2013 Ralph Walker and his sisters Jennie and Edna Walker were born in Kansas but later made their homes in Norfolk. Ralph married Florence in 1920 and they moved to Norfolk in 1938. He was a school superintendent in Kansas for 16 years then entered the insurance field in 1935. In Norfolk, he established Bankers Life of Nebraska Agency and continued with the company until retiring in 1958. Ralph's sister, Jennie, was a math teacher for 42 years at Norfolk High School. She retired in 1968 and passed away in 1991. The Walker family was active and involved in many aspects of the community. Their love for quality education founded this memorial scholarship. Must be used for remission of tuition, fees, room, or board. This scholarship will be awarded upon receipt of completed semester transcript of post-secondary education. One half of scholarship will be awarded following first semester, one half of scholarship will be awarded following the second semester. Selection Criteria: 1. Good citizenship 2. GPA of 2.0 or higher 3. Individual financial need 4. Must attend a recognized college or university. 5. Must write a personal essay (see application). 6. Selection committee will include NPSF Scholarship Committee with recommendations from the NHS Principal and Assistant-Principal. 2013 Scholarship Amount: $200 2013 Number To Be Awarded: One Application Deadline: April 2, 2013 Ralph and Florence Walker were involved members of the Norfolk community for decades. Ralph was an insurance executive by trade, but was often honored for his work with youth, especially in the sports field. He was very active in many civic organizations and with his church. Mr. and Mrs. Walker's support and love for youth sports founded this memorial scholarship. Must be used for remission of tuition, fees, room, or board. This scholarship will be awarded upon notification of acceptance prior to the beginning of the first semester of the academic year. Selection Criteria: 1. Good citizenship 2. Average GPA 3. Individual financial need. Any individual who receives scholarships or financial aid that is equal to the expenses incurred for tuition, books, room, board, and fees, will not be eligible. 4. Must be a male athlete with general athletic ability and value to team. 5. Must attend a post-secondary institution. 6. No application is needed. 7. Selection Committee will choose recipient based on criteria. Selection committee shall be Assistant Principal/Athletic Director, Head Football Coach, Head Boy's Basketball Coach. Doug Witte/ELL Tribute Scholarship2013 Scholarship Amount: $250 2013 Number To Be Awarded: Two Application Deadline: April 2, 2013 In 1993, Mr. Doug Witte joined Norfolk Public Schools as principal of Washington Elementary. Washington Elementary, at that time, served as the host school for the NPS K-6 ELL program (English Language Learners). Mr. Witte helped champion a program that would prepare ELL students for classrooms in their neighborhood schools and to become active members of their community and school. In addition, the Washington Elementary ELL program facilitated a K-8 Summer School program for all ELL students in Norfolk and Madison. In 2001, Mr. Witte became the Director of Student Services and in 2009 the Assistant Superintendent of Schools. The ELL program has evolved to include all NPS school buildings and Mr. Witte continues to support the teachers, staff, and students of this program.
Mr. Witte also serves his community and students as an active part of the Norfolk Community Health Care Clinic, an involved member of his church, and has offered his support to many other student activities like The Zone and Norfolk Arts Center. He participates in the Norfolk Men’s Chorus and Norfolk Chamber Singers. Mr. Witte was named National Distinguished Principal in 2000.
This scholarship was created by an anonymous donor, in recognition of Mr. Witte’s outstanding community involvement and dedication to the success of the ELL program, as well as its teachers and students. It is intended to celebrate the ELL student that has worked hard to master the English language, has been involved in their school/community, and has a desire to attend college.

Selection Criteria: 1. Applicant must have received English Language Learner (ELL) services at some time in their school career at NPS, and be a member of the NHS graduating class.. 2. GPA of a 2.0 or higher will be required. 3. A written recommendation from an ELL teacher/para-professional is required. 4. Two scholarships are awarded. One scholarship will be awared to a recipient that shows participation in at least one activity in school and/or community. The second scholarship will be awarded to a recipient that shows participation in at least one music related activity. 5. Must write a personal essay (see application). 6. Selection will be made by the NPSF Scholarship Selection Committee. |
