Performance Level Descriptors:
Target-based grading uses proficiency scales for marking student performance. Proficiency scales describe the performance expected from the student on a learning target. Grading with proficiency scales provides clear communication to students and parents about the student’s strengths and weaknesses on that learning target.
NPS PLC teams are creating proficiency scales to clearly define levels of learning against priority standards. Below are generic descriptions of proficiency level descriptors. Specific proficiency scales are developed for prioritized learning targets and used within individual courses to determine student grades. The use of proficiency scales supports accuracy, consistency and equity in the grading system.
