Students spend Wednesdays in the computer lab working on STEAM, Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math. Oftentimes students are given a challenge and they have to figure out a way to complete the challenge with the limited materials they are given.
This month students were given a challenge that dealt with plastic cups. The activities varied from Kinder to fourth grade but the base was the same. Students were given a set of plastic cups and had to complete a task. Kindergarten had to build a structure to support their counting bears from the table when it turned into "Lava!" 1st and 2nd graders were given challenge cards that just gave a final shape of a tower that they had to replicate and then they were challenged to build their own tower with the limited number of cups and 3rd and 4th graders did a relay to see who could match a challenge card, down to the color of dot on the cup being in the right spot, before other teams. This challenge focused on working on spatial awareness, hand eye coordination, imagination, and of course teamwork. There was smiles all around as they worked together.
