Big Numbers in Our Kindergarten Classroom

In our Kindergarten classroom, the children have been working with a special Montessori math activity called the 45 Layout, and it has been so exciting to watch them explore big numbers in such a hands-on way.
The 45 Layout helps children understand the decimal system by working with units, tens, hundreds, and thousands. The students use large number cards and match them with the Montessori golden bead materials. These materials include single unit beads, ten bars, hundred squares, and thousand cubes. As the children work, they carefully match the correct quantity of beads to the number cards and lay everything out on a mat.
One of the wonderful things about this work is that the children are not just looking at numbers on paper, they are holding the quantities in their hands. They can see how ten unit beads make one ten bar, how ten tens make a hundred, and how those hundreds build all the way up to a thousand cube. When they lift the thousand cube, they quickly realize just how big that number really is!
The children work together to build the layout, counting carefully and helping each other check their work. It is amazing to see their confidence grow as they realize they can work with numbers in the thousands. What might seem like very big numbers suddenly becomes understandable when they can see and touch the quantities.
Our Kindergarten mathematicians have been doing an incredible job with this work, and we are so proud of the focus, teamwork, and enthusiasm they bring to the classroom each day!
