First and Second Grade News - Mrs. Vanness' Class

Spring is just around the corner! The past few months have just flown by and our classroom has been buzzing with activity.

First of all, I would like to say thank you to all of the parents for attending parent-teacher conferences that we had at the beginning of February. It is so nice to sit down and talk with each of you. We have the greatest parents at Lincoln/Montessori, and I know that all of the staff here would agree.

Our classroom just finished a unit on Antarctica and penguins. We learned many fun and interesting facts. The students were divided into groups and researched a penguin, draw the penguin to scale, and then write a report on the information they had learned. This was a unit that all of the students seemed to love....we all love learning about animals!!

Below are facts that we learned during our penguin unit:

Claire - I learned that when they huddle together they are in a rookery.
Maggie - I learned that their feet can be pink, black or blue.
Addesen - I know that their feet can be black, pink or blue.
Desarae - I learned that the dad penguins take care of the egg for a month and have no food.
Harlie - I learned that they huddle up in the winter to keep the eggs warm.
Ian - I know that alll penguins do not live in Antarctica
Blake - I learned that their nests are in rookeries.
Raul - Penguins are good sliders.
Mallory - Some penguins never come out of the water.
Miley - I learned penguins have claws that can grip into the ice.
Lydia - I learned that the macaroni penguin has red eyes.
Elizabeth - I know that penguins waddle.
Kennedy - Penguins are good swimmers.
Brynn - Penguins are fluffy when they are babies.
Briley - Penguins cannot fly.
Evelyn - I know that one kind of penguin is blue. It is the Adelie.
Liam - I know that penguins feathers are waterproof.
Dawson - Penguins are warm blooded.
Aidan - Emperor penguins weigh 70-80 pounds.
Isaac - Penguins have webbed feet.

We are hard at work on our contracts too. In the math area we have been working on subtraction with and without borrowing, place value, addition with carrying, telling time, ordering numbers, money and fractions. In the language area we have covered topics such as synonyms, homophones, antonyms, graphemes and grammar work just to name a few.

Happy March everyone!
