Spirit Week, Homecoming Dance Consume Beginning of October At Norfolk High
October has arrived with the dry leaves falling from the trees, and the cold early morning breezes coming with it. At Norfolk Senior High, students prepared for the Homecoming dance which took place October 10 in the small gym. Homecoming usually centers on a football game, but schools have been known to have homecoming basketball, soccer, or even hockey games.
According to Fastweb!, the tradition of homecoming started after 20 years of battling on neutral sites, the "Border War" was to be played for the first time on a college campus due to new conference regulations. The two teams would meet on Missouri's campus. To ensure good attendance, the coach and Director of Athletics - Chester Brewer - invited alumni to "come home" for the game. The game ended in a 3-3 tie, but was celebrated by 10,000 alumni, with a parade, a spirit rally, and a bonfire. It was a huge success that eventually spawned homecoming celebrations at high schools and colleges across the country.
The homecoming dance is just for the students of the school, and it is open to every student no matter what grade they are in. There is always a DJ or a band. At Norfolk High the tickets cost 10 dollars ahead of time and 15 dollars at the door. Students can bring an outside guest under 20 years of age, but they have to fill out a form from the office. The homecoming royalty was selected by the seniors. The senior boys selected the five queen candidates and the senior girls selected the five king candidates. The candidates running for king were TeJai Clausen, Riley Coy, Gunner Fuelberth, Caleb Licking, Jacob Martinez, and Andrew Meuret. And the candidates running for queen were Molly Deichmann, Riley Jonson, Erika Kumm, Erika Medel, Kaylani Pekny, and Haiden Sullivan. The rest of the student body voted to select the king and queen from the list of candidates. The homecoming king was TeJai Clausen and the homecoming queen was Erika Kumm. The dance was a great celebration and most students enjoyed the music and the coronation.
