“If people say girls are not competitive, they clearly have not watched Powder Puff Football,” Lane McCallum, Senior girls Powder Puff coach said.
Trash talk, glitter, and flags sum up Norfolk High School's annual Powder Puff games. On October 16th, the 21st annual Powder Puff games were held by Norfolk High School’s DECA.
The Powder Puff games are always a big event for NHS because it is not your average football game. In these games the girls get a chance to show their football skills by having boys from the same grade coach them. They then get to play flag football. Although the game is only 40 minutes long, the girls get a lot done. The teams are divided by grade. This year there were the Spicy Sophomores, Jaw-Dropping Juniors, and Class of 2017 Seniors. The first game was sophomores against juniors. The game started off with the juniors scoring very quickly putting them in the lead 7-0, but that did not stop the sophomores from coming out on top. The sophomore/junior game went into triple overtime and was a back and forth battle between the two teams. Whenever one team would score, the other would score right after. The final score was sophomores 36 and juniors 34. That meant that the Spicy Sophomores had another game to play against the Class of 2017 Seniors. The seniors came out ready to compete. The final score of the Sophomore/Senior game was 42-28, with the sophomores ended up winning the championship. It was a big win for the Spicy Sophomores because over the past 21 years that DECA has held Powder Puff at Norfolk High, only three sophomore teams have been able to make it to the championships and win, making the Spicy Sophomores the 4th team to win it all while still being the youngest.
