Tis’ the season to spread a whole lotta friendship and kindness! Here’s how we celebrated in Miss Cronin’s 2nd Grade:
- Students brainstormed a long list of adjectives that describe their friends. We then passed our Valentine bags around from student to student adding words that we felt best described that particular classmate. We ended up with bags that were not just colorful, but COVERED in kindness. The kids were full of smiles reading their finished bags!
- We spread kindness to local nursing home residents by making special Valentine’s to brighten their day! Also, students made special 3-D heart wreaths and Valentine projects to share with those they love at home.
- On Valentine’s Day, we used candy hearts for our math lesson. We practiced graphing, adding, estimating, measuring, and fractions! It was extra special to taste a few candy hearts when we were done.
- In reading, we read Roses are Pink, Your Feet Really Stink where we focused on cause and effect. Students discussed the effects of giving our friends mean Valentine’s, just like we saw in the story. Additionally, we talked about how to fix the problem that the mean messages create. We all agreed -- it is best to just BE KIND from the beginning.
- Finally, students had the chance to share Valentine’s with all their classmates. During our exchange we talked about the importance of using manners and expressing our gratitude for the treats we were given. Students took turns receiving their Valentine’s and expressing their appreciation right on the spot.
It truly was a day where you could spot kindness everywhere in our classroom. Students went home with many sweet treats, big smiles, and very happy hearts! Their teacher did too!
