Second semester in third grade is exploding with new concepts and events to look forward to! First of all, third graders are working hard to master multiplication facts! Families can help by asking your child a fact at the dinner table, in the car while running errands, or before you tuck them into bed at night.
In March, we also started cursive -- another pillar of third grade! Students are almost done with the lowercase letters so next week, we will jump into the capital letters and continue working on the five S's of cursive writing: smoothness, spacing, slant, size, and shape. It is also so important for our students to be able to read cursive. Try writing your student a note in cursive. This will help them with this tricky skill AND create memories between you and your child!
Our third graders are becoming wonderful writers in more ways than one! Once we learned about animal adaptations in Science, students wrote about how a tiger adapts to challenges in its environment. After that, students chose a different animal and published another expository writing piece.
Did I mention that in between cursive and expository writing, third graders are also writing to pen pals from Elkhorn Valley Schools? These students have been getting to know each other through letters since October. Students are getting very excited as the time of meeting their pen pal draws near! We look forward to meeting these new friends in May! This pen pal project is such a festive way to practice letter writing and social skills.
Third grade is such an important and pivotal year. We love watching your third grader grow and learn! Keep working hard at home on those multiplication facts and writing skills! Fourth grade is just around the corner!
