NERP Hosts Arts Festival

The Northeast Regional Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program (NERP) hosted an Arts Festival at Norfolk Middle School on Friday evening and Saturday morning of March 31st and April 1st. A National Presenter, Trix Bruce, came from Seattle to be a part of the event.

The NERP program provides support services for teachers, students, and families in the 20 counties of Northeast Nebraska. Approximately 30 students attended the event and were able to participate in a variety of activities both days, including learning about different careers, storytelling through facial expressions, and creating stories using handshape.

"We are in year 25 of the Nebraska Regional Programs. It is so important for children with hearing differences to have strong, positive role models. They often are singletons in their buildings and the Nebraska Regional Program's goal is to foster those supportive relationships with DHH adults and peers through these educational gatherings. Thanks to Trix and all of the other members of the Deaf Community for making the Arts Festival a success!" said Jill Hoffart, Coordinator Northeast Nebraska Program for Children who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.

"Kids were so good at what they did. They truly make a difference in their accomplishments telling stories in ASL. We really enjoyed looking through their sharing stories," expressed presenter Trix Bruce.
